Drain cleaning is not the same job every time
A slow bathroom sink and a backed-up main sewer share a name — "drain cleaning" — and share almost nothing else. The wrong tool wastes your money and can damage older pipe. Here is how we choose:
Cable augers (snakes) are best for a single fixture with a soft clog: hair in a shower drain, a toothbrush in a toilet, food in a kitchen line. We use 1/4-inch to 3/8-inch cables for fixture drains and 5/8-inch to 3/4-inch drum machines for main lines.
Hydro jetting uses 3,000+ PSI water through a rotating nozzle to scour the entire pipe wall clean. It is the right call for grease-caked restaurant kitchen lines, mineral-scaled cast-iron in older National City homes, and roots we have already cut with a cable. A jetter costs a bit more per visit but the line stays clear longer.
Sectional root cutters are for main-line clogs where roots have entered at a joint. We cut them back and then follow up with a jetter to flush the debris out.
Cast iron, galvanized, Orangeburg — what the camera actually shows
The reason we camera every older National City home after clearing: the same slow drain has three completely different meanings depending on your pipe material.
Cast iron (common in homes built 1920s–1970s) corrodes from the inside. Scale builds up in flakes and rough patches that catch every piece of paper and grease. The clog will come back in weeks unless the section is either jetted regularly or replaced.
Galvanized drain lines (rare but present in some pre-1960 homes) rust closed the same way, sometimes to the point where a 2-inch line is functionally 3/4-inch.
Orangeburg (installed as sewer laterals through the 1970s) deforms into an oval shape. The camera shows a squashed, flattened section that no amount of clearing will fix. It has to come out — usually with a trenchless liner or pipe burst.
What we won't do
We won't recommend a big repair job to solve a small clog. We won't sell you a hydro jet on a fragile pipe that would fail under the pressure. We won't pour chemical drain cleaner into your cast iron — it accelerates corrosion. And we won't leave without showing you what the camera saw.
Same-day service across the South Bay
Most drain cleaning calls in National City, Chula Vista, Bonita, Lemon Grove, Imperial Beach and Coronado are handled the same day you call. We stock main-line jetters, sectional machines and mini-jets on multiple trucks.
Our shop is at 1010 W 19th St, three minutes from I-5 and five minutes from National City Blvd. For restaurants along Highland Ave and property managers with recurring problem lines, we set up quarterly or semi-annual jetting on a fixed price so the clogs never come back. Call (831) 290-4327 and a live dispatcher will confirm a real ETA before you hang up — no call center runaround, no "we'll get back to you."
