Why the backup happened — and why it will happen again if you skip the camera
A sewer backup is not a "just clear it" job. Something caused it, and clearing without diagnosing means it comes back — often within weeks.
Root intrusion. Tree roots enter through joints in clay laterals and grow into a mesh that catches paper and grease. Cutting the roots buys you 6–24 months. Lining the pipe or replacing it is the permanent fix.
Orangeburg collapse. Homes built between 1945 and 1975 in National City, Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach and Lemon Grove commonly have Orangeburg laterals. These deform into an oval and eventually collapse. Every backup is a preview of the total failure. Replacement is not optional — only "when."
Offset joints. Clay pipe sections that have shifted in the soil, creating a step where waste catches. Small offsets: line. Big offsets: pipe burst or open trench.
Bellies. A section of pipe that has sagged so waste sits in it. Bellies do not self-clear and get worse over time.
City-main blockage. Rare, but if it is on the city side of the tap, the city fixes it. We document with camera footage so responsibility is clear.
Category 3 protocol — why we do not cut corners
Sewage water carries E. coli, salmonella, hepatitis A and dozens of other pathogens. IICRC S500 standards classify it as Category 3 — "grossly contaminated." Cleaning it with a mop and bleach is not enough.
Our protocol: pathogen-rated extractors, EPA-registered antimicrobial applied to all affected surfaces, removal of any porous material (drywall bottom 12+ inches, carpet, pad, upholstery) that had direct contact, HEPA air scrubbing during removal.
Skipping steps risks family health and voids insurance coverage.
Insurance and sewer backup
Standard California homeowners policies do NOT cover sewer backup by default. A separate "water backup" or "sewer backup" endorsement — typically $40–$100/year — does cover it. This is one of the highest-value endorsements you can add.
We provide claim-ready documentation whether you have the endorsement or not: cause of loss, photos, camera footage of the failed lateral, itemized invoice.
The follow-up quote is optional — but usually right
After we clear the immediate backup and camera the lateral, we hand you a written quote for the underlying repair (root cutting maintenance, CIPP lining, pipe burst, or open-trench replacement). You can take it, get other quotes, or wait. There is no pressure. But if the lateral is Orangeburg or heavily rooted, ignoring the camera footage is expensive false economy.
Our shop is at 1010 W 19th St, three minutes from I-5 and five minutes from National City Blvd. Sewer emergencies are our highest-priority dispatch. If waste is on your floor right now, call and we roll immediately. Call (831) 290-4327 and a live dispatcher will confirm a real ETA before you hang up — no call center runaround, no "we'll get back to you."
